JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

JPEG is perhaps the most famous bitmap format. Its peculiarity is that when compressing, you can make a choice either in favor of quality or size. Lossy compression is used, that is, you choose what quality should be, as a result of which the size of the resulting file is determined. The compression ratio can be set in the settings of graphics programs - the lower the quality, the smaller the image file, and vice versa, the higher the quality, the larger the file is. And this helps to economize on hard disk space.

JPG files are supported by all image viewers and editors. This is the most common image format. It is widely used in digital technology (cameras). The reason for such widespread use is the rather good quality and small file size. JPEG is a flat image format, which means that all changes are saved in a single layer, so it is not very suitable for editing and working with layers.

A few years ago, the JPEG2000 (.jp2) format was created, which uses a more powerful compression algorithm, but has not been able to supplant its progenitor. You can work with a raster in such convenient and well-known editors as Adobe Photoshop and Paint. They can be easily sent from phone to phone, by email or posted on the Internet. JPEG is ideal for web images that need to load quickly.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

PNG is a raster graphics format that uses lossless compression and can be 48-bit color. PNG is an image with a transparent background and often weighs more than its JPG counterpart. This format supports not only transparency, but also translucency from 1% to 99%, which is a big plus. Unlike JPEG, saving a digital file as PNG does not degrade its quality.

PNG does not allow to create animated images and the compression ratio is not much higher than the previous formats. The main application is internet use and graphics editing. If you need an image on a transparent background, PNG is the best option. PNG has long been a web standard and one of the most common image formats used on the web. PNG is a format for storing and transferring raster images without significant loss in quality.

Transparency works as follows, information about gamma correction is written to the file. Gamma correction is a certain number of brightness, contrast of the monitor. This number is subsequently read from the file and allows you to correct the image display by adjusting the brightness. PNG-8 only displays 256 colors. PNG-24 allows you to work with the maximum color depth (24-bit).

Converting JPG to PNG

There are various file formats for recording graphic information. The most common are JPEG (or JPG) and PNG. Each has its own characteristics and its own scope. Graphic designers and photographers can use PNG files to archive and back up images. JPEGs are great for sharing on digital platforms. Sometimes you need to convert one format to another. This can be done in different ways. Any image format can be easily converted online. After converting the picture, it becomes possible to download it to your computer.

JPG Advantages

  • Less weight compared to other formats
  • Shooting in this format affects the sharpness, contrast and saturation of photos, so they require less post-processing
  • JPEG format is supported by any computer, tablet, smartphone, program or even application
  • Easy to use compression settings
  • Unlimited color palette

JPG Disadvantages

  • JPG has fewer options for further processing of the photo
  • Shooting in jpeg format affects print quality
  • Lack of transparency support
  • By default, JPEG supports 24-bit color recording (8-bit per channel RGB)
  • Permanent data loss during compression
  • The need to control the compression ratio to maintain detail

PNG Advantages

  • Full support for alpha-transparency - transparency. Allows you to make areas of the image transparent and semi-transparent
  • High quality compression algorithm without quality loss. Similar to LZW, but slightly more efficient
  • The ability to interlace, and (unlike GIF) both vertically and horizontally simultaneously
  • Built-in gamma correction. Allows you to attach the display settings to the image, so that on different monitors the image is displayed in the same way as the author

PNG Disadvantages

  • Quality will not be sufficient for printing at any size
  • Does not suit well for displaying texts
  • PNG files comparable to JPG in the number of colors will weigh a lot
  • PNG images cannot be animated like GIF images. But the associated .MNG format can be animated
  • PNG images do not provide CMYK support because they are not intended for use in professional graphics
